Rhythm reading trips up many beginners—not the notes, but the timing. Instead of guessing, use simple strategies.
Clap First: Before touching the piano, clap or tap the rhythm while counting aloud. Feeling it in your body anchors the pulse.
Count Subdivisions: For tricky passages, break beats into smaller units. Count “1-and-2-and” for quavers or “1-e-&-a” for semiquavers.
Use a Metronome Slowly: Start slower than performance speed. Accuracy first, speed later.
Group Patterns: Don’t see eight quavers—see four pairs. Recognising patterns makes reading faster.
Speak the Rhythm: Saying “long-short-short” or “ta-ti-ti” reinforces memory.
